不过，英国人却似乎没有一个不懂得鸟语；所以，他们有一句成语说：A little bird told me（是一只小鸟告诉我的）。这句成语也有神话色彩——它出自《圣经-传道书》第十章：‘传音自有云间鸟，述事岂无众羽虫’(……a bird of the air shall carry the voice,and that which hath wings shall tell the matter)。
当然，英国人说A little bird told me的时候，不是真的表示自己懂得鸟语，只是用开玩笑口吻避免透露消息来源，例如：
“How did you know he was going to resign?”（你是怎么知道他会辞职的？）
” Ah, a little bird told me.”（啊，是小鸟告诉我的。）
其实，A little bird told me.的意思是“我是不会告诉你我是怎么知道的”：
something that you say in order to let someone know that you are not goingto tell them who gave you the information being discussed
